Part III

HEGEL AND THE BROKEN MIDDLE

This section brings together aspects of Hegelian philosophy and Rose’s interpretation of the broken middle to reveal the interrelationship in both of their works between social and educational relations. Chapter 6 argues that our relation to ‘other’ requires to be comprehended as a formative yet contradictory self-relation in which self and other are inextricably bound within a circle of misrecognition. This misrecognition determines the relation of each to himself, of each to the other, and the relation between those two relations. To comprehend social relations is to comprehend the determination of misrecognition by itself, a determinate negation which has its own self-relation in this educational activity and result. Similarly, Chapter 7 argues that educational relations, particularly those of knowledge to consciousness and teacher to student, are also bound within the same circle of misrecognition. Educational categories and identities are already formed within the misrecognition which constitutes our social relations. To comprehend educational relations, therefore, is at the same time to comprehend social relations. The separation of social relations from educational relations is already misrecognition. To recognise this misrecognition, and to comprehend the relation between social and educational relations as a broken middle, is a development described later as comprehensive education.
